The determination of the added amount usually requires consideration of the following factors:
- Type and quality of carbon black: Different types and qualities of carbon black may require different amounts of Dongfugui dispersant. For example, the amounts of low-pigment carbon black, high-pigment carbon black, and conductive carbon black are completely different.
For example, the low-pigment carbon black slurry uses 10-20% of the carbon black amount, the high-pigment carbon black slurry uses 50-100% of the carbon black amount, and the conductive carbon black may be 1:1 or 1:2. This will be affected by different manufacturers or different models. You can look at the specific surface area or oil absorption value of carbon black.
- Required performance: The performance required by the specific application will affect the amount of dispersant added. For example, carbon black dispersants have different applications in rubber products, inks, coatings and other fields. Different systems have different requirements. Consider the amount of carbon black added to the formula, the dissolution polarity of the solvent, and the dispersion of the resin.
- Process conditions: Process parameters, such as stirring speed, temperature and dispersion time, will also affect the amount of dispersant added. Process conditions, such as sand mill, three-roller grinding, ultrasonic dispersing equipment, high-speed mixing equipment, and some even hand-mixed or hand-held dispersing equipment, these also affect the addition of dispersant. Generally speaking, the better the process, the better the dispersion. The better the dispersant can perform. There are also some dispersants specifically designed for post-addition, but their performance will decrease if subjected to high shear.
Generally speaking, the amount of carbon black dispersant added should be determined based on the specific situation and the manufacturer’s recommendations. Adding too little may result in uneven dispersion and performance issues, while adding too much may increase cost without benefiting performance. Therefore, it is best to follow relevant process specifications and recommendations and conduct experiments to determine the optimal addition amount.
The following is the application dosage of Dongfugui dispersant in carbon black slurry
Low pigment carbon black: 10%-20% (pigment-base ratio)
Medium and high pigment carbon black: 20-50% (pigment-base ratio)
High pigment/extra black: 50-100% (pigment base ratio)
You can also refer to the specific surface area/oil absorption value parameters of carbon black.
Amount of dispersant (g) = [Specific surface area of pigment (m2/g) ÷ 500] × Weight of pigment (g)
If possible, the Daniel flow measurement method can be used to evaluate the optimal dispersant addition.
